Another site I've been on has an option in a player's profile of whether or not he/she wants to allow conditional moves in games. If not, their opponent can't use them against them. If so, their opponent has the choice. I personally don't see the point - if I want to use them, why shouldn't I be able to? You don't have to use them yourself. I would favor only moves that I have actively decided on though, not forced moves or moves the system considers obvious.

You are absolutely right tewald.
Also I don't see any negative in conditional moves. Why shouldn't you make your next move already, when you are quit sure what your opponents move is going to be, forced or not forced.

So I'm playing against someone who takes their full time allowance on each move (and I'm sure we've all met them!) I use my forced move against him because he has no optional move. But after my next move he now has several moves and takes his full time again. There won't be many times in a game when the forced move scenario crops up so how will this speed up the game to any great extent?

Corvidae,
you use here as an argument the worst possible opponent. Of course conditional moves won't help a lot speeding-up games against them.
But there are also games at which as well you and your opponent don't like to use the 7 days availeble. If not online at the same time, conditional moves are very usefull.

The other site I spend much time at allows different lines for conditional moves. If I can figure you're probably going to make one of two moves, and I know what I want to do in each case, I can have each line go a few moves deep. If my opponent does something mid-line that does not match what I expected, the conditional line simply stops, and it's my move. Meanwhile, my opponent has not had to wait for me (and I haven't had the opportunity to forget what I wanted to do!).
