How about overlapping ranges like the following:
1900-
1600-2200
1300-1900
1000-1600
-1300
open

This gives roughly a ~600 point range for each tournament. Most people will be eligible to join two tournaments (not counting the open one), yet it will keep the players in the same tournament roughly equivalent. The down side is that there may not be as many players in any given range. What do you guys think?

600 points is too wide for the low rated players..the low rated players will never have
a competitive tournment among themselves...a range tournament range like:
...1000
1001....1400
1401....1800
1801....2100
2101........ :-(O)

..oh and for those whole like an very open range
tuornament you could add
...1400
1401.....

as two open range tournaments %-)

Yes, but with overlapping ranges, you will have a challenging tournament. Let's say I am ranked 1410 (rather close to my actual ranking). In your system I can only join the 1401-1800 tournament. Most likely I will have a tough time. With my overlapping system, I can join 1300-1900 and 1000-1600 giving me one tough tournament (roughly the same as your 1401-1800) and one tournament in which I'm towards the top. This should be true for any ranked player between 1000 and 2200.

If 600 is too big a spread:
2000-
1800-2200
1600-2000
1400-1800
1200-1600
1000-1400
800-1200
-1000

In fact, I would prefer this spread, BUT there may not be enough players here yet to support this many tournaments. That's the trade off until this site becomes more popular (which does appear to be happening).
