I think you need to read up on the history of that time...the Americans didn't come into the european theater til much later in the war..and the Canadians, Australians and British as well as the French resistance had much more to do with your freedom. We came because of Hitler's threat on europes freedom not because of any gain to our own economy or to run our automobiles. Iraq's situation has been like it is since time beginning.
The US sent troops to England soon after Pearl Harbor to show support for England and France. The troops trained there for a few months. Some small units may have been used in commando-type raids. One of the first American units to be deployed to England was the 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division. This unit saw more time in combat than most infantry divisions, including the 1st Infantry Division(which was pulled out of combat to prepare for Normandy landings).
The first deployment of American troops in the European Theater was at the landings on North Africa on 7 November 1942. The country that opposed their landings was Vichy France, who were allied to Germany due to the fall of France.
As the American army moved east to Tunisia, they eventually encounted the German army. The first American unit that fought the Germans was the 175th Field Artillery Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division. On 19 November 1942, the 175th FA entered combat with the British 78th Division at Medjez-el-Bab, Tunisia.

WOW, thats a great one Moondawq, Now you try to attack me with wrong facts. The resistence, (and resistence was not only in France, but in all occupied countries) did not achieve a lot against the Nazi,s.
I like to remind you, that it was me who tried to stop you guys, with this useless discussion, which was not launched by Jim Morrisson. (See 8 posts backwords) It was you, who kept on attacking the U.S., and disrespect them.

Local resistance was of course common to every occupied country at the time...i personally think the americans are some of the most generous and finest people on this planet..i do not disrespect them but i have a right to voice my opinion on it's governments actions as it affects us all. You will find a great number of americans also feel strongly against this occupation in Iraq.
