| onceupon seems resistant to change |
What an ignorant thing to say. If you'd looked beyond this thread before you wrote that, you may have observed the opposite to be true.
In fact, I've been shot down before for encouraging change. But might I oppose what I see as needless modification? Yes.

If it's needless then why are people requesting it? Oh.. I see.. it's needless from your perspective. Well that settles it then... end of story. When I began playing on Queen Alice, I wondered why the site even had a 'message to opponent' feature if the length of the message was so truncated. As was suggested by the other forum posters it would be nice to communicate during the game without the formality of a separate message. It's also helpful in terms of discussion, teaching and even mentorship in the case of communication between high rated players and lower rated players. For example, a friend of mine has a young daughter who is just starting out and I have been offering advice and suggestions with each corresponding move in order for her to grasp some subleties within the game. Obviously it is more instructive for her if she can read the comments with the current position open before her. Similarly, stronger friends have given analysis during my games with them that have also enhanced the games we have played. In each case the message length was an issue though... These are just a few examples. Anyway just a few thoughts from me. I'm sure that in an effort to be contrary, onceupon will launch some scathing missive against me. Again I see this request as quite reasonable and hardly worth the rancour it seems to have generated.

Yes, I don't fully understand the resistance to doing away with the message limit. For those who use the private mail function, or for those who have little use for longer messages, it stands to reason that you just wouldn't care whatsoever if the limit is done away with. It changes nothing for you while in turn it offers the option for those who desire to write longer messages. Nothing is stopping people from limiting their messages to the original 200 characters if they wish to continue doing so.

If the limit is too low, perhaps it could be raised, though not completely removed. I would not want an opponent to send me a comment that is so long that I have to scroll two pages to finish reading it.
