Gil, no offense intended but your lack of English skills (OTOH, I have NO knowledge of Portuguese) might be causing a problem here. Although communism and socialism are similar, and I might very well be confusing them, I am definitely not confusing socialism and Christianity. I was contrasting them, not comparing them. This difference can be difficult to pick up in a language not your own.

chouia, Obama is the most left-wing of the left-wing Democratic party. From his actions - not his words, which are far different - he's a socialist.
catalan, President Bush is the President of the United States, not of Europe. For the United States, I believe he's been a good president. For one thing, we have not been attacked on American soil since 9/11/2001.
Carter was a much worse president, leaving our country with very high unemployment, high interest rates, and high inflation. Clinton and the Democrats of his time put into effect laws that made banks give loans to people who could not repay them, which has now brought about this financial crisis.
I would take President Bush over either one of them (or Obama) any time.

And bush hasn't? Even if the numbers are not in the same area as Carter's, bush has left the U.S. in very bad shape and is certainly not deserving of praise.

True, but bush had 8 years to fix it and did nothing. Now he just hands them multi-billion dollar bailouts which the banker and wall street criminals pocket.

The numbers Bush is leaving behind don't begin to approach those Carter left behind. Now consider all the bad press Bush has gotten. What do you think would have happened if he'd somehow managed to stop the banks making loans to people who could not afford those loans? I'm not excusing him - I wish he had had the guts to do that. However, leaving the poor without the unpaid-for houses that the Democrats convinced them that they "deserved" would have been political suicide for the Republicans. The Democrats made up more than enough lies about Bush; one can only imagine what they'd have said if he had actually done something like this that they could twist to claim he did not care about the poor. And then there's the race thing; way, way too many of those poor are black, so the Democrats (and their many friends in the main stream media) would accuse him of being a racist.
Again, I wish he'd gone ahead and done it anyway, but I can see how politics could get in the way.
BTW, I'm 58, have never made 6 figures in a year (even including my wife's income), and am neither a banker nor a Wall Street "criminal". However, my retirement funds (what little they were to begin with) are quickly shrinking, and if banks and other financial firms are allowed to collapse, my retirement funds will shrink even more. The bail-out is not just for the rich. I don't like this bail-out, but I don't know of a good alternative, either. Check out the conservative pundits, and you'll find that the great majority of them were against the bail-out.

Economically speaking, the problem is, if Bush had "had the guts to stop the banks making loans to people who could not afford them", he would have act as a Democrat....
Besides, I really do not think race is so important in this election....ideas are really the most important thing, no ?
Elect someone just because of the colour of his (her) skin is discrimination.
I am not happy of Obama's election because of the colour of his skin, I enjoy it becuse I really think the democrat ideas are better than the republican ideas.
