"tewald Nov 10 2008 06:09 PM: "Clinton and the Democrats of his time put into effect laws that made banks give loans to people who could not repay them, which has now brought about this financial crisis."
True, but bush had 8 years to fix it and did nothing. Now he just hands them multi-billion dollar bailouts which the banker and wall street criminals pocket."
Bush did not have the power to stop it. The Democrats have the house majority.

True, None. I figured if I said so, though, I would be accused of offering up excuses.
chouia, you and I found something we can agree on: The color of the skin should not matter. However, in this year it did matter a great deal, since Obama and the Democrats made a big deal of it. Of course, what you and I do not agree on is the value of the Democrats' ideas: I voted against Obama precisely because of those ideas and even more because of his own actions and associations. I would love to see a black man or woman in the White House, but one with respect for our country's constitution and its original intent. I wish our current secretary of state (a black woman) had run; I could have been very enthusiastic about her candidacy.

Now they do but the republicans were a majority up until 2006, that's when democrats became a house majority (for whatever that's worth).
As for the loans, from what I'm hearing and reading, the banks are offering very little in the way of loans from the bailout money. They're hoarding it up to buy smaller banks with. As you said tewald, many conservatives were also against the bailout and rightly so. Turns out it was just a huge freebie (or welfare payment if you prefer) to corporate psychopaths.

Tewald: I agree with everything you have said. We were dismayed with Bush because he acted more like a Democrat in some of the pork bills he did not veto, but Carter was a disaster, Clinton allowed nuclear technology to go to China...which was never questioned by our media...and Obama has a background of shady alliances. The Libs are furious over some of his appointments, but wait until his second term to see his true colors.

Audrey: Other than his trying to outspend the Democrats, I think Bush has been a decent president. He has done a very poor job of communicating with the American people, however, explaining why he's done what he's done.
I hope Obama doesn't get a second term. Clinton is the only Democrat since Truman to get elected to two so far.
