I only mentioned that one because I had personal knowledge of it. A linguistics prof in college told us about the find, but he was unaware that anyone had heard of them before 1890 or so. He is and was very intelligent and well informed; when I told him it was in my 1611 King James Bible, he was surprised.
You're right that the Hittite thing isn't discussed anymore; fine. However, it was discussed prior to the find, and the criticism was never taken back as far as I know. I'm just saying that this is the way things normally go. BTW, instead of a proof against the Bible, it becomes a reasonable proof in favor of it, at least to the extent that it originated a great deal of time ago (before the Hittites were forgotten).

Fair enough.

It's not entirely clear what it means to `take back' such criticism. Maybe the author of the original remarks was dead by the time the archaeological finds were made. Maybe he disputed that the archaeological finds were related to the Biblical Hittites (Wikipedia has unsourced -- and therefore unreliable -- claims that some scholars dispute the connection even today).

I don't think anyone's seriously arguing that the Bible isn't very old?

There are criticisms trying to claim it doesn't go back fore 600 BC or so. Just as there are some that claim the New Testament was written in the 300s or something like that.

That's not something I'd heard.

Just saw this topic and as a Christian I have no doubt about creation. Even Darwin himself doubted the evolutiontheorie by the way. If you really want to experience and understand all the 'evidence' there is, there is one way to do that: become a Christian! The Holy Spirit will show you things you couldn't believe before. And yes everbody can do this. It just a matter of choice, choosing Jesus. But as we are on a chess site: do you really think that Chess has evolved bij accident? Some bouncing molecules suddenly became a complex game like chess? Let alone life it self! Evolutionists also believe that in nature everything has a reason fo survival. So if you are an evolusionist tell me the purpose of the rainbow. I dont mean how it works (like water, light and prisma etc). No: tell me the meaning in terms of survival? You cant! But as a Christian I know the purpose of the rainbow. Just check Genesis chapter 9 or any other place in the Bible. Now you know the purpose of the rainbow. Well this topic cant be discussed fully here but I hope you all will be saved! God Bless all of you.
