It would be great if there wasn't a limit on the size of message you can send to your opponent with each move - i think at the moment it's 200 characters, which is fine for brief comments about the game, but no good for striking up a real conversation. As QA is a website with a great sense of community spirit i'm suprised the limit is even there.... any thoughts people?

Good idea, but this option is already available; you can send a private message to your opponent instead of through the game.

Is there a limit on the length of a private message?

but a private message is different, like an email. you don't write a private message to someone you are just getting to know unless you have something specific to say; whereas sending messages with your moves in a game is more like a casual chat over the board - a way to get friendly with someone to the point that you would exchange private messages or emails outside of a game.
As far as i can tell there is no limit on the length of a private message. i don't understand why there is on in-game chat.

Are you chatting to distract the opponent into making bad moves?

Send a PM instead.

You've already admitted that game messages are sufficient to get to know your opponent.
